January 2017 Newsletter
'Supporting volunteering and the voluntary and community sector in the Forest of Dean'
Happy New Year from FVAF!

What to expect from FVAF in 2017...

You may have noticed there have been a lot of changes at FVAF over the past few months and we're hoping to continue this in 2017.

Representing the Voluntary Sector

We are running and attending lots of events as well as working with colleges, universities, health professionals and businesses to showcase the importance of volunteering both personally and to the community as a whole.

FVAF will continue to sit on a number of boards and remain stakeholders in various projects to ensure the sector is represented appropriately throughout the community

We are in the process of creating a business directory to enable the voluntary sector to work more closely with the private sector. We are also hoping to re-publish our 'Where can I go today?' booklet so people are aware of what's on offer in their communities. If this is something you are interested in or think you could help us, please feel free to get in touch.

Volunteer Recruitment

We will continue to advertise volunteer vacancies for anyone needing volunteers. We now send out information regarding vacancies on Facebook and through our 'volunteer opportunities' mailing list. We also continue to see an increase in people visiting FVAF for one-to-one advice regarding volunteering.

Training

At FVAF we strongly believe that everyone benefits from a skilled voluntary sector. As a result our training porgramme continues to grow rapidly and over the past 4 months we have trained over 150 people with a 100% satisfaction rate. As well as safeguarding, first aid and food safety, we are also running marketing, basic computer skills, volunteer management and trustee workshops.

We are also hoping to run manual handling courses in the near future so if this is of interest to you please let us know.

Providing Advice and Guidance

We help a number of groups every week to become more sustainable through assisting with development, legal advice and financial and volunteer management. We continue to expand and diversify the way in which we disseminate useful information and guidance including on our website, Facebook and through Mailchimp.

Thanks for all your ongoing support in 2017 and beyond!

CLIC Sargent - Community Campaign Volunteer

Throughout the year CLIC Sargent has lots of exciting campaigns to raise awareness and funds to support our work. We are looking to gear up our people power across Gloucestershire to make sure even more people know about CLIC Sargent and what we do. We need feet on the ground and eyes on the street...we need you!

Can you give a couple of hours here and there at various points throughout the year to go into your local area and spread the word about CLIC Sargent? You’ll be talking to local businesses, giving them flyers and putting up posters, you’ll be getting our name out there in the best possible way.

Friends of the Dean Heritage Centre

- We would like some young people interested in the heritage of the FOD to join our committee- we are a supporters group dedicated to the Collection held at Camp Mill, Soudley  at the Dean Heritage Centre, and to assisting those who run it.  We feel that we need to engage younger people and families in becoming the next generation of custodians of our wonderful Forest heritage. Our committee meet 3 or 4 times per year plus our AGM, and communicate by email in between.

- An Editor for our quarterly Newsletter ( with or without the possibility of articles also being written by the person concerned). We feel this would be best filled by a person who has an interest in the Forest of Dean and if possible, lives here.

- A secretary who would be able to take the Minutes at our meetings.

- A new Subscription secretary.
Yorkley Community Centre - Numerous

We are in desperate in need of help in a number of areas to continue the smooth running of the Community Centre.

Can you help us with any of the following;

·  Baking cakes for the cafe
·  Assisting with the running of the cafe, (this just involves taking for and making teas and coffees, serving cake, - a couple of hours, once per month or less)
·  Assisting with general maintenance
·  Assisting with events, setting up tables, bunting, helping with the bar etc.

Any offer is greatly appreciated, your help could be for a couple of hours a month, or once or twice a year helping with an event.

We already have teams working in these areas so we are not asking anyone to do it by themselves, we just need more help.

Here are just some of the many volunteering opportunities available through FVAF and Do-it.org
