Welcome from your Programme Director
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Department of Geography and Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science. Congratulations on your acceptance at one of the world’s leading social science institutions.
Whilst at the LSE, you will take core courses which provide a critical grounding in the processes, instruments and outcomes of environment and development, as well as help you better understand the nature, measurement and management of sustainability. You will also have the opportunity to undertake optional courses.
If you want to do any reading prior to arriving at the LSE, then I would recommend:
- López, R., and M.A. Toman (2006) Economic Development and Environmental Sustainability. Oxford University Press
- Neumayer, E. (2010) Weak versus strong sustainability: Exploring the limits of two opposing paradigms, Third edition, Edward Elgar, ISBN-10: 1848448732
Please note, preparatory reading is not required, and you will be able to follow the programme and pass the exams if you start with your readings in September.
I hope you will have a thoroughly challenging and rewarding year of study as you work toward your MSc degree. I very much look forward to meeting you in September. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of the summer!
Best wishes,
Dr Charles Palmer
