Programme Regulations
MSc programme regulations can be found here. Each programme has a dedicated page. Programme regulations show the structure of the programme including core courses, the choices you can make and a list of pre-approved or popular optional courses.
We advise you to familiarise yourself with the requirements specific to your programme and, most importantly, how many optional units you can select.
|
|
Course Guides
A list of all courses available at Masters level in the School can be found on the course guides page. You can cross reference the courses listed in the programme regulations with the courses on this page to get more detailed information about course content, teaching, assessment and course survey results.
Tip: the courses mentioned on the programme regulations page are hyperlinked to the relevant course guide page to save you searching through the course guides.
|
|
Indicative Reading
Although pre-reading is NOT a requirement, the course guide pages include suggestions for indicative reading. Taking a look at these readings may prove useful if you wish to get an idea about the course content of your core courses, or any optional courses, before arriving at LSE.
|
|
Optional Courses
Please be assured that you do not need to make your course choices before you register at LSE. We do advise using the weeks leading up to your arrival to narrow down possible options using the information on the webpages mentioned above.
Getting a ‘short-list’ of possible courses makes more productive use of your time when you arrive and will make the course selection process far more manageable.

Graduate Course Choice Dates
The online course selection facility will be accessible in LSE for You throughout the following periods:
- Orientation Week 'browsing' period: from 19 September 2016
- Michaelmas Term: from 10.00 on 23 September 2016 until 12 noon on 10 October 2016
- Lent Term: from 10.00 on 9 January 2017 until 17.00 on 20 January 2017
You will be able to familiarise yourself with the system during the 'browsing' period, however you will not be able to save any course selections during this period. You are therefore not able to make any course choices before you arrive at LSE.

Graduate Course Choice Guide
Once you have your LSE IT Account, go to LSE for You, click on ‘Graduate Course Choice’ and then ‘Graduate Course Choice – Student’.
There are detailed instructions available on LSE for You for how to use the Graduate Course Choice system. There is also an alternative text based guide.
Controlled Access / Capped Courses
The majority of courses within the Department are ‘controlled access’ due to limited places and/or having pre-requisites. For controlled access courses, students must submit an application via the Course Choice system to apply for a place. More information on controlled access courses can be found here.
If you wish to take a controlled access course from another department, your application will be subject to consideration by the department hosting the course, not the Geography department. This could affect your chances of gaining a place on the course, depending on how the host department applies their own selection criteria.
Once the relevant department has made a decision regarding your course application, the system will update and you will receive an email notification to your LSE email account.
Please note: If you have been offered a place on a controlled access course, you will need to log back in to the graduate course choice system and indicate whether you would like to accept or decline the offer. You will be given two working days from the time the email was sent to make a decision. If you do not take any action by this deadline, the offer will expire.

Completing your Course Choices
You are required to select all 4 whole units that make up your degree by the time the Course Choice system closes at 12 noon on Monday 10 October 2016. This means you will be required to select your Lent Term options without being able to sample them at this stage. For this reason, the system will re-open at the beginning of Lent Term to allow you to make any changes to your Lent Term course choices.
Note: some Lent Term course availability may be limited by the time the course choice system opens for the second time at the beginning of Lent Term. As a result, you should choose your Lent Term courses as accurately as you can by the time the initial course choice window closes in October.

|
Seminar Allocation
Instructions on how to sign up for individual course seminars will be circulated during the first weeks of term. This may vary from course to course but the relevant administrator will be in touch with information closer to the time.
|
|
Timetables
Once all course selection and seminar sign up is complete, you will be able to access your personal timetable via the Student Timetable application in LSE for You.
Until you complete your course choices you should manually refer to the Timetables website for course scheduling information.
