Australian Opals play at Madison Square Garden

The Australian Opals played the United States national women’s basketball team in a historic exhibition match at Madison Square Garden on 31 July. The game attracted over 13,000 fans and Australian star centre Liz Cambage scored 22 points, a personal best.

Despite their loss at the Garden, the Opals should have another opportunity to challenge the United States at the Olympic finals in mid-August.

Australian ties with basketball in the United States are strong. Hundreds of Australian men and women play basketball in the US college system and 150 of them compete in division one on full scholarships. There are currently eight Australians playing in the NBA.

It will advance Australia’s international collaboration and encourage Australians to leverage entrepreneurial expertise.

AWNY: Australian Writers in New York

The Consulate was  pleased to co-host an Australian Writers in New York panel with the Australian Women in New York (AWNY) on August 4. Over sixty guests heard Australian authors Georgia Clark, Lexi Freiman and Rachel Hills (pictured) speak candidly about the challenges of writing and getting published in New York. The discussion was moderated by Estelle Tang, Culture Editor at ELLE.com.
