Hi friends and family, colleagues and fans.

My new novel, Underground Airlines will be published on July 5, six days from today, by Mulholland/Little, Brown. [I will be using this newsletter format to send very occasional updates going forward; PLEASE unsubscribe from this list if you're not interested.]

ABOUT THE BOOK

A new mystery by the author of the Edgar Award winning, Philip K. Dick Award winning Last Policeman trilogy, Underground Airlines is an alternate-history detective novel about race and racism.

The book is set in a nightmare version of contemporary America, in which the Civil War was never fought, and slavery is still practiced in four Southern states. The protagonist is a black man and runaway slave, forced to work undercover as an enforcer of the Fugitive Slave Act.

We have received some exciting advance press, including from Publisher's Weekly ("The Invisible Man meets Blade Runner in this outstanding alternate history thriller"), Kirkus ("moves deftly from a terrific premise and builds to a satisfying conclusion") and Booklist ("hard to put down and impossible to forget.")

James Patterson says of the novel "it is a rare thing when a writer has a fresh new provocative idea – and then executes it beautifully." Lauren Beukes called it "The Handmaid's Tale for Black Lives Matter." Lev Grossman says Underground Airlines is "a top-flight thriller that’s as emotionally searing and tragically plausible as anything in contemporary fiction."

Underground Airlines has appeared on lists of the "must-read books of the summer" everywhere from The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune to Vox to Cosmopolitan and O Magazine.

The American Booksellers Association chose Underground Airlines as the #1 pick on the "Indie Next List" of great books for July. "They is the most important book of the summer," said their endorsement. "Read it."

You can preorder Underground Airlines at your favorite local bookstore, or online, or wherever you like to shop for books. I am grateful.

Last thing: If you live in Southern California, please come see me at Diesel Books in Brentwood on August 2.

With best wishes for a great summer,

On the other hand, if you know someone who might be interested in the book, I hope you'll consider forwarding this along.)
