Hi.

I had a whole big email planned for this month. I was going to tell you about some exciting stuff happening in my career. I was going to have the usual images and links and fancy typography. I don't know. It doesn't feel right now.

I just wanted to say hi.

I don't know about you, but it’s been hard. Hard to sleep. Hard to calm down. Hard to smile for my kids. There are some dark things being said and done here in America and it’s cast a shadow over everything. It’s been difficult to find light. Literally, here in the US, daylight is fading day by day. I wonder how it would be if our country were to swap places geographically with, say, Australia, and the seasons were reversed and summer was on its way. Maybe this would all feel a little less heavy.

I feel fragile. And restless. And manic. I get that way, so maybe it’s my own chemical imbalance. But I have this incredible desire to do something. What?

I did one thing. I wrote a song. Some of you might not agree with the feeling it evokes, but others might find that it provides some comfort. Maybe some of you need a little sonic therapy. It’s free to download and listen to. It’s also free to ignore.

I did a second thing. I donated to Running Start, a nonpartisan — I repeat, nonpartisan — organization that inspires and trains the next generation of young women political leaders. If you just want to do something positive, maybe this is for you. It’s a non-profit organization and your donation is tax-deductible. For info, visit runningstartonline.org.

Lastly, my daughters are too young to read, but if they were older, I’d steer them clear of Twitter and the TV news and instead encourage them to read something like what Alyssa Mastromonaco wrote for Broadly: A Letter to Young Women: How We Will All Move Forward Together Now.

With love,
Val
