Hi everyone,

I have a serious question for you. Ever since I started this Slack group I thought of it as a place for people to geek out about innovation in journalism and discuss the things that matter. Now discussing is something humanity has probably done since they first argued about having meat or berries for dinner. And most of the time they did it in person. So I am now for months thinking about:

Do you actually want to meet in person?

I know, meeting people in person is a difficult, distressing step for us digital natives but most times you can get a lot more out of it than the online chit-chat can give you.
As we are so widespread all over the world, organizing a meeting is something that has to be put a ton of thoughts on. There are several options with some kind of a conference as the most obvious one and a meetup at SXSW in Austin in March as the most easiest to implement.

So before thinking all these thoughts, I would love to get some feedback from you. Could you do me a huge favor and click on this button to let me know within 13 seconds how you feel about it?

  • We started with a discussion about the future of Periscope and if Snapchat is going to lose users to Instagram stories. As always I would love to hear your opinion on these matters.
  • I also wrote a short summary of the predictions regarding trends in 2017 by some of the leading social web experts from Germany which was originally published by Jörgern Camrath of Welt (Berlin). What do you do with your super-engaged audience?
  • What about the development and maintenance of highly engaged audiences within readers’ (closed) Slack teams, subscribers’ Facebook groups, and the like? @shanwang kicked off this discussion with her article on the case of The Boston Globe, where a Facebook group’s activity of roughly 2’000 subscribers exceeds the newspaper’s main Facebook group’s activity reaching nearly half a million users.

What the Medium case tells us about our monetization issue in journalism
  • Medium dominated the monetization channel this week, first with @virginia's debut of her piece, highlighting a promising bit of research: if a country has a culture of publishers asking for payment for content, people are more likely to subscribe.
  • On the other hand, medium's announcement (thanks for introducing it, @linatimm!) rattled the journalism community, with the worries that as goes Medium, so goes the industry. @simon brought up Zeynep Tufekci’s fear that the move meant advertising wasn’t a viable way to generate revenue, concluding, "No real way around this but subs + micropayment + philanthropy,” while @ezraeeman suggested there may be sense in aiming for a member-funded platform (a la The Correspondent).
  • @henrik.stahl highlighted Jessica’s conclusion on the medium debacle, quoting, "Truly new models, which happen to be simple old ones, threaten incumbent financiers and executives. So, to those media leaders who want to truly fix the broken media business in 2017, I wish you the courage to ignore the “innovators” and become one yourself."
