Hi everyone!

are you about to delete this email unread? DON'T! We had an awesome week in our Digital Journalism Rocks Slack and our awesome horde of channel rockstars summarized everything to the very heart of the discussion.

We talked about if Snapchat is going to be meerkated by Instagram (No!), who takes the lead in breaking news (still discussing) or what the hell Twitter is doing (no one knows).

So if you read anything this week, read this newsletter! And then join our discussion in Slack.

Rock on & read you in Slack!

No more Clickbait in Facebook?
  • Guess it was only a matter of time - Facebook is testing ads in Live video, should play 5 mins into broadcast and last ≤ 15 seconds. According to @mattnavarra, Facebook might replace typed emoticons with user photos.
  • In other news, Facebook's new Page sections help small businesses actually make money. The Shop section lets businesses list products they’re selling, and allows customers to put in an offer through Messenger, while the Services lets them do the same for, well, services.
  • @henrik.stahl reported that Facebook’s latest algorithm might really be punishing clickbaits. Join the conversation, if you have an opinion about the matter.

How to manage real-time investigation?

  • Myself (@henrik.stahl) and @linatimm had a quite interesting discussion about real-time investigations. @linatimm identified two major problems with this approach:
  1. Keeping the suspense up while nothing really happens. You can’t plan stories as you normally do or tell just the highlights - because you don't know what's happening next.
  2. There is always information people don't want to have published so they start to fight against you when you're still investigating.
Do you agree? Or do you have examples of similar projects, that have either home south or turned out to be a real blockbuster hit? Join the discussion!

Earpiece language translators seems not to be so magic we thought they were

This week, we talked about earpiece language translators in general, and the Indiegogo project Pilot in particular. @tilman shared some really interesting insights on the topic:

  • Pilot doesn't work without the cellphone and an internet connection. So the earplug is just like normal mic.
  • The video doesn’t say anything about how well this works with noisy backgrounds, accents or with which languages. And there’s so much double meaning in many things we say, that it’s hard to get that.

If you’re curious about this kind of technology read more here.

Will Instagram soon be replacing Snapchat?
  • That was the topic of the week. As Instagram launched “stories”, a new feature that looks quite like Snapchat, @tilman wondered if it’s legit to speculate about a “meerkat moment” for Snapchat. But soon everyone agreed that a) Snapchat is already too big to be “meerkated” (word of the week by @linatimm) and b) Facebook is too smart to try dragging Snapchat users away from it. That’s what Ben Thompson says.

Who does breaking news best?

This week we’ve been discussing innovative breaking news outlets.

  • @madalina.ciobanu suggested Wall Street Journal’s graphics team, and “for debunking rumours on social, Les Decodeurs in France, BuzzFeed; Washington Post on fact-checking.”
  • @tilman added al-jazeera, and for debunking FirstDraft and the likes
  • Also, Quartz and Tampa Bay Times was mentioned (the latter as a “dark horse”).
Do you have other suggestions of innovative breaking news outlets, besides the obvious ones (Breaking News, Storyful, Join the discussion!

Social Media Strategy, Buffer vs. Hootsuite and tools for audio

What is Twitter doing? (No one knows.)

Finally some activity in the Twitter channel. We discussed:

  • Why the hell did Twitter add Stickers? (No one knows.)

  • What was the last new Twitter feature that got celebrated by most users? (No one knows. It’s definitely been a while.)

  • What things should Twitter focus on instead? (Instant micro publishing.)

  • How could Twitter implement an edit function? (Still to be discussed, good ideas welcome.)
