Age diversity in companies: ‘older and younger workers face common challenges’

Anne-Sophie Parent, AGE Secretary General, participated at a meeting of European Diversity Charters in Brussels.
Diversity Charters are voluntary initiatives in a number of EU member states to promote diversity inside companies. Ms Parent and the European Youth Forum’s Marianna Georgallis addressed the representatives of the charters to highlight the importance of age discrimination.

EU conference highlights positive mental health as key to active and healthy ageing

On 7th February Mental Health Europe (MHE) organised an event in the European Parliament to discuss the role of positive mental health in promoting active and healthy ageing. The event gathered experts and policy makers including the Irish Minister for Mental Health and Older People, Helen Mc Entee.

European Day for Victims: let's protect also the victims of elder abuse!

On the occasion of the European Day for Victims of Crime, AGE Platform Europe calls on European Union countries and the European Commission to implement in a comprehensive and ambitious way the 2012 European Union Directive on Victims' Rights.

To mark this day, AGE Platform Europe publishes a position paper stressing the importance of using the process of implementation of this Directive to improve the protection of older persons who have suffered abuse, violence and maltreatment.

'Disability-related benefits should not stop at retirement', says UN OHCHR

Recently, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UN OHCHR) published a detailed report on how to ensure equality and non-discrimination for people with disabilities.  Looking into article 5 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the OHCHR report reflected the inequalities, prejudice and day-to-day challenges of many disabled people, which include older people, as the probability of developing a mental or physical disability increases with age.

Age UK members debate impact of Brexit on older people and address Secretary of State

Positive Ageing in London and AGE UK member organisations organised on 11th January 2017 a meeting to discuss the impact of Brexit upon older people. Under the title “Brexit for Older People - What Does This Mean For Us?”, this meeting is the first of a series of discussions that will look at what people aged 50+ expect from a post Brexit UK in order to make their voices heard during the Brexit negotiations.

European Semester : Commission delivers country reports

The European Commission has released its country reports on the social and economic situation in member states mid-February. The Country reports highlight the main issues that the Commission sees in member states. It concludes that the economic and social situation is improving, but that large challenges remain, mainly high unemployment and poverty rates and instabilities in the banking and financial sectors.

Press review: "How to adapt to ageing societies?"

How can we manage the change and embrace the opportunities presented by shifting demographics? This is the question that addressed an article of the latest ISO Focus focusing on active ageing. In a paper entitled "How to adapt to ageing societies?", the author comes back on the opportunities offered by standardisation to support the adaptation of goods, services and environments to the needs of ageing populations.

Active Ageing: MoPact Leaves Us with Food for Thought

This month, the MoPAct Project, in which AGE was a partner, drew to an end. The research project had the objective to provide the research and practical evidence which enables to make longevity an asset for social and economic development in Europe. Research results covered many disciplines, ranging from econonometrics to Biogerontology, from long-term care to employment of older people, from technical developments to social participation of older people.

Good Practices

Sport prescribed to frail seniors in Strasbourg, France

The French city of Strasbourg offers sport classes to frail older persons as part of a sport & health prescription programme set up by the municipality in 2012. Doctors can prescribe sport lessons adapted to the patients' conditions in order to prevent falls and loss of autonomy.

'Fit & Mobile 77+': sport training programme for retirement home residents in Austria

'Fit & Mobile 77' is a specific physical training programme to improve older people's endurance and balance, set up by the retirement home group SeneCura in Vienna, Austria. The programme is one of the winners of the ORPEA Excellence Awards celebrated in Paris in January 2017. Implemented in 15 retirement homes in Austria, this programme aims to address age-related functional and mobility limitations and muscular loss that increase the risks of frailty and falls.

The 2007 European Handbook on equality data provided a first overview of how best to collect and analyse data on issues relating to equal treatment in the European Union context. This new edition also addresses new issues concerning equality data collection which have emerged since then.
